Prepare to be stuffed

Cambridge, MA | Wednesday, December 19th, 2012

What started out as a fun idea to join forces with the Kier Byrnes Freedom Runners for a fun run, turned into one of the greatest toy drives ever. Last night, TMIRCE and the Freedom Runners met at Courtside Restaurant and Karaoke Bar with the high hopes of bringing Christmas cheer to one another and spread it to the less fortunate children of Cambridge. What ensued was an all out blitz of generosity.

The night started with a fun run with band members of the Summer Villains and Three Day Threshold combining to form the Running Band – yes they ran with their instruments. As the jolly jaunt around the Charles River Basin began, the clear weather and good company indicated that the night would be special – Shout out to Maki for hanging in there during the run.

Upon returning to the bar, the band lit the atmosphere with some great tunes and festive sing-alongs. The toy pile continued to grow throughout the night. Kier was on hand to sing some tunes with the band, Tim led the run, and I handed out some gift certificates.

Guardian of the toys

Mark the Shark, famous Cambridge Karaoke DJ, got the singing started and the runners united in a frenzy of gut belching songs. During the mayhem, a few people stepped up to help carry toys to fill my car. Thanks Ben, Sean, and the people from the Freedom Runners for the helping hands.

This morning was special as I got to bring all the gifts we’d collected to the Salvation Army on Mass. Ave. The “toy shop” was in full swing as emergency families – Salvation Army classifies these families as high need – were picking out gifts for their children. They were overwhelmed by the generosity of the running community and will be sending us a nice thank you letter – TBA.

Thank you everyone who participated in the event. Sean Murphy can be quoted as saying, “There’s a big difference between Community Awareness and Community Service.” You all served with open hearts and will make a lot of little people jump, smile, laugh, play, and most importantly, feel special this Christmas.
